No battery included, but it isn't hard to find...

This light was made as an accessory to Canon's Pro line of cameras. It uses the same batteries as the XL1, XL2, GL1, Gl2, and a number of other cameras. It is assumed that if you are buying this light that you already have such a camera and have spare batteries, too. (What kind of videographer only has one battery anyway?).
The light also comes with instructions that clearly list the models of batteries that work with it. Buying Canon original batteries/chargers is difficult/expensive, but there are plenty of cheap aftermarket batteries/chargers available for reasonable prices. This is a great video light when you can find it for a decent price. |
Great video light for the Canon HV30

| I stumbled on this camera while shopping for video lights to give the talent more facial detail and less shadow. It's a big light (about 2/3 the size of my Canon HV30) and quite heavy with the battery attached. The halogen light is very bright (and gets very warm!) compared to the other smaller on-camera video lights I researched, and it worked well at about 10 feet from the speaker. A downside is you need to buy a separate battery and charger. I'm using the Digicom BP-945 compatible battery and the recommended charger which I purchased together at Amazon for around $40. It has been money well spent. I am very pleased with this light, after having shopped for many weeks to find one that was bright and worth the money. |

| It's a bit brighter than I expected it to be, which is a good thing! Works well, seller shipped quickly. My favourite thing about this is that I use 2 Canon GL2's for my wedding shoots, with plenty of batteries, and the VL-10 uses the same batteries so it's very convenient. |
Good basic light

Very pleased with the way this light helps in dark situations. It really helps highlight faces and works well when your subject is 4 - 8 feet away. Too close and it is too harsh on both your subject (squinting) and your footage (hot spots), too far and it doesn't illuminate the subject good enough.
Obviously a point source of light near the lens may leave undesirable shadows on the subject and their surroundings, so it won't make a really bad lit situation look great. It will, however, help you make faces and close-by objects look acceptable in poor lighting when a better lighting set-up isn't available and portability is essential.
It's a good light for its intended purpose. I may buy another for a second camera. |
